Cat Flap & Dog Flap Installation in Devon

Devon has a higher share of older homes than most of England, built from stone and, in many villages, cob: a traditional mix of earth and straw. It also has two national parks and a long coastline, all of which affect where and how a pet flap is fitted.

Homes in Devon at a glance

What the official figures mean for fitting a pet flap. Figures cover Plymouth, Torbay and the eight Devon districts. These are area-wide figures, so your own home may be quite different. We'll always look at your actual door, glass or wall.

25.2%

of homes were built before 1919

England average: 20.3%

A quarter of homes were built before 1919, above the English average. Older walls are often solid stone or cob, which need special care.

28.9%

of homes are detached houses

England average: 22.9%

Detached homes are more common than average, especially in rural districts, so there's often a choice of door or wall.

Cob and stone walls

Cob walls are thick and can be damaged by cutting without the right approach. We generally don't recommend cutting cob for a pet flap; a timber or uPVC door, or a replacement glass unit, is a safer option. Solid stone walls can take a flap with an extended tunnel, but a door is often simpler. West Devon, Torridge and North Devon have the highest shares of pre-1919 homes, around 29–34%.

National parks and the coast

Dartmoor and Exmoor National Parks have their own planning authorities, and many Devon villages are conservation areas. Coastal homes in places such as Torbay, Salcombe and Ilfracombe face strong winds and salt air, so a flap with good seals and corrosion-resistant fittings will last longer.

How quotes work

  1. Tell us where you'd like the flap and what type of door, glass or wall it is. Photos help.
  2. We confirm availability for your postcode and send a no-obligation quote.
  3. If you go ahead, we agree a date. Glass installations need a replacement unit to be made first.
  4. Your flap is fitted by one of our own local engineers.

Questions from homeowners in Devon

Can you fit a cat flap in a cob cottage?

We'd usually avoid cutting a cob wall. A flap in a timber door, or a glass installation, is safer for the building. If the property is listed, check with the planning authority first.

Do I need permission on Dartmoor or Exmoor?

A flap in a modern back door usually doesn't, but listed buildings and some conservation areas do. Check with the national park authority if you're unsure.

What's the best flap for a coastal home?

One with a strong magnetic closure, brush seals and corrosion-resistant fittings. A door that's sheltered from the prevailing wind is better than one facing the sea.
