Cat Flap & Dog Flap Installation in Hampshire

Hampshire ranges from the crowded terraced streets of Portsmouth and the flats of Southampton to detached homes in the New Forest and the South Downs. Two national parks and a busy coastline add a few things to think about.

Homes in Hampshire at a glance

What the official figures mean for fitting a pet flap. Figures cover Southampton, Portsmouth and the eleven Hampshire districts. The Isle of Wight isn't included. These are area-wide figures, so your own home may be quite different. We'll always look at your actual door, glass or wall.

27.9%

of homes are detached houses

England average: 22.9%

Detached homes are more common than average across the county, though not in the two cities. Many homes have a choice of door or wall for a flap.

Two cities and the rest of the county

The two cities are very different from the rest of Hampshire. About 43% of homes in Portsmouth are terraced, and around 40% of households in Southampton live in flats. In New Forest, East Hampshire and Hart districts, more than four in ten homes are detached. Flats bring fire-door and lease considerations; detached homes usually have more options.

New Forest and South Downs

Both national parks have their own planning authorities, and many villages within them are conservation areas with listed cottages, some thatched. If your home is listed, check with the national park authority before altering original doors, windows or walls.

Fareham, Havant and Eastleigh have very few pre-1919 homes, around 5–7%. Most homes there have cavity walls, which are usually fine for a wall-mounted flap.

How quotes work

  1. Tell us where you'd like the flap and what type of door, glass or wall it is. Photos help.
  2. We confirm availability for your postcode and send a no-obligation quote.
  3. If you go ahead, we agree a date. Glass installations need a replacement unit to be made first.
  4. Installations are carried out by our own engineers, not subcontractors.

Questions from homeowners in Hampshire

Do I need permission for a cat flap in the New Forest?

Usually not for a modern back door, but listed buildings and some conservation areas are different. The New Forest National Park Authority can advise.

Can a flap go in a flat's front door in Southampton or Portsmouth?

No. Flat entrance doors in shared buildings are fire doors and must not be cut. A ground-floor patio door, window or wall may be possible with consent.

Who handles planning in Hampshire?

Southampton and Portsmouth city councils, the eleven district councils, and the two national park authorities in their areas.
