Homes and doors in Scotland

Tenement flats are common in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee. Main doors open onto a shared common stair, and a flat's entrance door onto the stair usually needs to resist the spread of fire, so it isn't a suitable place for a pet flap. Ground-floor flats with a back door onto the back green, or a suitable window, are often better options.

Scottish homes are often built from thick sandstone or, in Aberdeen, granite. A wall installation needs an extended tunnel, so a door or replacement glass unit is often the neater solution.

Permissions to check before installation

Shared parts of a tenement, such as the main street or back-green door, belong to all the owners. Altering them needs their agreement under your title deeds or the Tenement Management Scheme.

Listed buildings need listed building consent from the local council (Historic Environment Scotland is the national body). Edinburgh's Old and New Towns are a World Heritage Site and conservation area, so check with the council before altering anything visible from the street.

If you rent your home, get your landlord's written permission first. We can't give planning advice for a specific property, but we're happy to explain the options so you can ask the right questions.

Weather exposure

The west of Scotland gets a lot of wind-driven rain, and northern winters are cold. A well-sealed, insulated flap with four-way locking keeps homes warm and dry.
