Cat Flap & Dog Flap Installation in West Yorkshire

West Yorkshire's housing is unusually varied for one county: back-to-back terraces in Leeds and Bradford, stone-built mill towns along the Pennine valleys, and modern estates around Wakefield and the M62. Where a cat or dog flap can go, and how it should be fitted, depends a lot on which of these you live in.

Homes in West Yorkshire at a glance

What the official figures mean for fitting a pet flap. Figures cover the five West Yorkshire council areas: Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds and Wakefield. These are area-wide figures, so your own home may be quite different. We'll always look at your actual door, glass or wall.

28.9%

of homes are terraced houses

England average: 23%

More terraced housing than the English average. Terraces usually mean a kitchen or yard door at the back, unless it's a back-to-back with only one external door.

23.4%

of homes were built before 1919

England average: 20.3%

A higher share of pre-1919 homes than average, many with thick solid stone walls. Wall installations here need a longer tunnel liner, so a door or glass installation is often simpler.

Stone walls and Pennine terraces

Across Calderdale, Kirklees and the western side of Bradford, older homes are typically built from local gritstone or sandstone, with solid walls that are much thicker than a modern cavity wall. Cutting through that for a wall-mounted flap is possible, but it needs an extended tunnel and more time, and it isn't always the best choice if a suitable door is available.

Hillside terraces are common in towns such as Halifax, Huddersfield and Hebden Bridge. Doors can open straight onto steps or steep yards, so it's worth thinking about the step height on the outside of a dog flap. Some dogs, particularly older or short-legged breeds, find a high exit awkward.

Back-to-backs and 'top and bottom' houses

Leeds and Bradford still have many back-to-back terraces. They share a rear wall with the house behind, so there's usually only a front door, which limits where a flap can go. Hebden Bridge, in Calderdale, is known for its 'top and bottom' houses: two homes stacked on a hillside, each with its own door on a different street level. In both cases we'll look at whether a door, a window or a side wall gives your pet the safest route outside.

Planning and permissions in West Yorkshire

Each of the five districts has its own planning authority. Saltaire, in Bradford, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and many village and town centres, including Haworth and Hebden Bridge, are conservation areas. If your home is listed or in a conservation area, check with your council before altering an original door, window or external wall. A flap in a modern rear door or a replacement glass unit is often straightforward.

If you rent, get your landlord's written permission first. In flats, the front door to each flat is usually a fire door and must not have a flap cut into it.

How quotes work

  1. Tell us where you'd like the flap and what type of door, glass or wall it is. Photos help.

  3. If you go ahead, we agree a date. Glass installations need a replacement unit to be made first.
  4. Your flap is fitted by one of our own local engineers.

Questions from homeowners in West Yorkshire

Which council should I ask about planning or listed building consent?

It depends on where you live: Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds or Wakefield. Links to each council are below. Most rear-door installations don't need permission, but listed buildings and some conservation areas are different.

Can a cat flap go through a stone wall?

Usually, yes, using a flap with an extended tunnel liner sized to the wall's depth. On very thick or uneven walls, a door or glass installation may be quicker and neater, and we'll explain the options when you request a quote.

I live in a back-to-back terrace. Where can the flap go?

With only one external door, the options are normally the front door, a window, or a side wall on an end terrace. We'll talk through security and draughts for a front-door flap, especially for larger dog doors.
