Cat Flap & Dog Flap Installation in Manchester

Manchester has more flats and more renters than most English cities, and very few detached homes. Before choosing a flap, it's worth checking whether your door can be cut at all, and who needs to agree.

What the official figures mean for fitting a pet flap. Figures are for the Manchester City Council area. These are area-wide figures, so your own home may be quite different. We'll always look at your actual door, glass or wall.

32%

of households live in flats

England average: 20.6%

Almost a third of households live in flats. In shared blocks, the flat's front door is a fire door and must not have a flap fitted.

32.3%

of households rent privately

England average: 20.5%

About a third of households rent privately, far above the English average. Tenants need written permission from their landlord.

5.4%

of homes are detached houses

England average: 22.9%

Only about one in twenty homes is detached, so most flaps go into a back door of a terrace, semi or ground-floor flat.

Apartments

In apartment buildings across the city centre, Ancoats, Castlefield and beyond, the entrance door to each flat is a fire door and can't take a pet flap. If you're on the ground floor with a terrace or patio door, a flap in a replacement glass unit may be possible, but the building's management company or freeholder will usually need to agree first.

Terraces and student areas

Victorian and Edwardian terraces in areas such as Levenshulme, Chorlton, Fallowfield and Withington usually have a back door onto a yard. A cat flap there is normally straightforward. Many of these houses are rented or shared, so ask your landlord first; a flap in a uPVC door panel can often be reversed later by replacing the panel.

How quotes work

  1. Tell us where you'd like the flap and what type of door, glass or wall it is. Photos help.
  2. We confirm availability for your postcode and send a no-obligation quote.
  3. If you go ahead, we agree a date. Glass installations need a replacement unit to be made first.
  4. We use our own engineers for every installation, so standards stay consistent.

Questions from homeowners in Manchester

Can a cat flap go in my apartment's front door?

No. It's a fire door, and cutting it would compromise its fire resistance. A ground-floor patio door or window is the usual alternative, with consent.

I rent a terraced house in Fallowfield. Can I have a cat flap?

With your landlord's written permission, yes. A flap in the back door is the usual choice.

Can you fit a flap in a balcony door?

Only if your pet can safely get down from the balcony, which usually means ground floor only. We won't fit a flap that leads a pet onto a high balcony with no safe way down.
