Converted houses and flats
Many Victorian and Edwardian houses in Westcliff and Southend have been converted into flats. For a ground-floor flat with a garden door, a flap may be possible, but leases often require the freeholder's consent.
Seafront and Leigh
Seafront homes face winds off the estuary, so a well-sealed flap with corrosion-resistant fittings is worth choosing. Leigh Old Town is a conservation area with listed buildings.

Questions from homeowners in Southend-on-Sea
I own a leasehold flat in Westcliff. Can I have a cat flap?
Check your lease for the freeholder's consent. The flat's front door can't take a flap.
Will a flap cope with seafront weather?
A good flap with brush seals and a strong magnetic closure, in a sheltered door, copes well.
Who handles planning?
